Title: The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health in Adolescents

Introduction:

In recent years, the use of social media has exploded among adolescents, with many spending hours each day on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. While social media can provide a number of benefits, such as allowing for communication and connection with others, there is growing concern about its potential negative effects on mental health. This study aims to examine the relationship between social media use and mental health in adolescents, with a focus on depression and anxiety.

Literature Review:

Research on the effects of social media on mental health is still in its early stages, but a growing body of literature suggests that excessive use of social media can lead to negative mental health outcomes. A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that excessive social media use is associated with increased rates of depression and anxiety in adolescents (Owens et al., 2018). Another study found that the use of social media was linked to lower levels of self-esteem and higher levels of body dissatisfaction (Rosen et al., 2017).

Research Methodology:

This study will be conducted using a mixed-methods approach, with both quantitative and qualitative data collected. The sample will consist of 200 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Participants will be recruited from high schools in the greater Los Angeles area.

The study will begin with an online survey that will collect data on participants' social media use and mental health. The survey will include measures of depression and anxiety, as well as questions about the amount of time spent on social media and the types of social media platforms used.

After the survey, a subsample of 50 participants will be selected to participate in in-depth interviews. These interviews will provide more detailed information about participants' experiences with social media and their mental health.

Expected Results:

It is expected that this study will find a significant relationship between social media use and mental health in adolescents. Specifically, it is expected that excessive social media use will be associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety. The findings from this study will provide important information for parents, educators, and mental health professionals about the potential risks of social media use in adolescents.
